Meta Is Removing Placement Controls. Here's What You Can Still Control

What's Changing

For years, one of the first things a careful advertiser did was untick placements. Feed only. No Audience Network. No right column. It was a quick way to stop budget going on low-quality inventory.

Meta is now removing manual placement controls at ad set level for campaigns using the Sales, Leads, Engagement and App promotion objectives. Placement decisions for those campaigns move to Advantage+ placements, meaning Meta's system decides where your ad appears.

Awareness and Traffic campaigns keep manual placements. That's worth knowing, but most businesses chasing leads or sales won't be using those objectives.

Why Meta Is Doing It

Meta's argument is that its system can spot cheap conversions across placements better than a person ticking boxes. To be fair, in a lot of accounts that's true. When we test Advantage+ placements against Feed-only, Advantage+ often wins on cost per result.

The catch is that cheap and good aren't the same thing. Audience Network and some in-app placements can produce form fills at a lovely price from people who tapped by accident. Those leads look great in Ads Manager and terrible on the phone.

What You Can Still Control

Losing the tick boxes doesn't mean losing all control. Here's what still works.

Account-level placement controls

Meta lets you exclude certain placements at account level. It's a blunter tool, because it applies to everything, but if Audience Network has never worked for you, this is where to switch it off.

Brand safety and inventory filters

Block lists and inventory filters are still available. If you're in a regulated or sensitive sector, set these up properly before anything else.

Per-placement creative

You can still supply different creative for different placements. This matters more than ever. If Meta is going to show your ad in Reels whether you like it or not, give it a proper 9:16 video with captions rather than letting it crop your square image.

The optimisation event

This is the big one. If you optimise for a cheap event, Meta will find cheap placements to deliver it. If you optimise for a qualified lead or a purchase, it has to find people who actually do that. Feeding back real outcomes through the Conversions API is the best placement control left.

What We're Changing in Client Accounts

  • Account-level exclusions reviewed - We've looked at 12 months of placement data for every client and only excluded placements with a clear record of poor-quality results.
  • Creative built for every placement - Every concept now ships as 9:16, 4:5 and 1:1, with safe zones respected for Stories and Reels.
  • Lead forms set to higher intent - Adding a review step and a qualifying question cuts accidental submissions dramatically.
  • CRM data fed back to Meta - So the system learns which leads became customers, not just which ones filled a form.
  • Placement breakdowns in every report - We still check where results come from, even if we can't steer it directly.
  • Is This Bad News?

Not really, if your setup is sound. The accounts that will feel it are the ones relying on placement exclusions to paper over weak tracking or weak creative.

This fits a broader pattern on Meta this year. With the Andromeda delivery system, the platform is steadily moving control away from settings and towards signals: your creative and your conversion data. Get those right and the loss of a few tick boxes won't matter much.

If you're not sure your account is ready, our Meta ads team can check your placement data and tracking and tell you what to change.
